A crisp 8C morning with bitter hillside winds greeted everyone at 6am on Friday 4th August 2017! It was the perfect morning for Adelaide Hills Citizens to put themselves in the shoes of the homeless persons on our streets and support the ‘Walk a Mile in My Boots’ fundraising walk.
‘Walk a Mile in My Boots’ is an exceptionally well organized and marketed event, run annually by Hutt Street Centre. Established in 1954, Hutt Street is a respectable South Australian Charity who provide over 50,000 meals per year to at least 2000 homeless and disadvantaged Individuals. They also offer social, financial and legal support services to these people.
To participate in WAMIMB, it only requires an hour of your time. The event is held at the grounds of the picturesque Hardy’s Winery in the main street of the well-known McLaren Vale region. Participants pay an entry fee which goes towards vital needs for Hutt Street clients, and then walk a mile as a group to get a taste of the cold walk the homeless face every winter morning. A second winter walk takes place in the Adelaide city later in August each year.
We had great support at this year’s event, with approximately 250 participants! The role of the Plymouth Brethren Rapid Relief Team (RRT) was to provide walkers and Hutt Street staff with hot drinks and a warm breakfast at the end of their walk. So, at 8am a steady stream of 250 hungry walkers returned back from their walk in the cold. They eagerly received a hot egg and bacon roll along with a choice of; hot chocolate, milo, tea or coffee!
Hutt Street has a desire to end homelessness for every person who walks through their doors and RRT commend them for their everyday efforts. It was a very enjoyable morning, and everyone started their Friday feeling good to have made a difference to the lives of some less fortunate citizens.
