On the 30th July RRT assisted with the Taranaki NZME Special Children’s Extravaganza for the second time, a day of fun for special children from Tamaranui to Whanganui full of activity to give them a lift in life.
For the crew behind it all, the day started early with setting up the stage, bouncy castles and the treasure tunnel. The 17-strong RRT team fired up the barbecues at 9:30am to feed the rest of the crew, who otherwise go without food until 4:00, and then at 11am the doors were opened to the flood of 1200 excited attendees.
The day was action-packed, with face painting, Ronald McDonald, free Paknsave food and a kapa haka performance by some of the children themselves.
RRT served free sausages in bread and hot chips to a constant stream of people, along with waters, popsicles, and fruit salad. The favorite part came at the end of the day; leading the children through the “toy tunnel” to collect their presents.
It was once again an unforgettable experience to see the thrilled look on the children’s faces as they received what for some would be their only present for the year.
Overall we served 1100 sausages and bread and over 90kg of freshly cooked hot chips, with enough leftover bread to give to families to take home. Event manager Mark Wickstrom said it was the best event he had run in Taranaki. A big thank you to Mark, the generous donators, the NZME team, all the rest of the volunteer crew and of course all of the amazing special children for the very enjoyable day!
