Coby Davies is a three year old girl who lives in the small outback town of Lake Cargelligo, central NSW. She was diagnosed with a Wilms tumour, a form of kidney cancer most often found in young children. This has required her to have extensive treatment at the Randwick Hospital in Sydney.
Living in the outback and needing specialist treatment can be extremely stressful for families with sick children. The parents can be away for weeks, even months at a time. Not being able to work and the need for accommodation can cause huge financial strain. This inspired their friends to organize a “Family Fun Day for Coby”. The day was to include a run along the beautiful foreshores of Lake Cargelligo, followed by a golf afternoon with plenty of fun activities for all ages.
The Lake Lap saw 68 hikers hit the track in the 10km and 5 km courses along with plenty of kids joining the 2 km fun run. Supporters came from as far away as Canberra, Wagga, Goulburn, Leeton and Hillston. Even a group of charity runners from Griffith) attended, proudly displaying their motto “running for others”.
RRT started out in the morning supplying water and fruit at each checkpoint during the fun run. Throughout the afternoon, RRT set up their mobile food trailer at the local golf club and provided a BBQ meal and drinks to supporters at this fund raising day for Coby.
The day was a great success, RRT served over 150 meals and the supporters raised over $20,000, which is a fantastic effort for a small town of only 1300 people. Coby is expected to be receiving treatment in Sydney until March next year and we wish her and her parents all the best for the future.
